It may be warmer in the city this weekend, but the bulk of winter is still ahead of us and many New Yorkers still need coats.

With that in mind, New York Cares partnered with the community non-profit BronxWorks on a coat drive in Morris Heights.

The groups handed out hundreds of slightly used and new coats.

Despite the event’s success, organizers say they’re concerned because they say the demand is surpassing the number of donations this year.

“Last year, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, we had an outpouring of support in terms of the coat drive, collecting over 123,000 coats. This year the need is still right where it was in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Unfortunately, we are not getting the donations in the numbers that we did last year,” said Steve Streicher of New York Cares.

There are collection centers throughout the five boroughs, including at police precincts.

The 25th Annual New York Cares coat drive runs through February 7, 2014.
