Truck owners from South Bronx may be eligible to obtain cash rebates to upgrade their older trucks.
The Hunts Point Clean Trucks Program offers rebate money for truck owners who are either based or operate regularly in the South Bronx communities of Hunts Point and Port Morris. The program requires existing trucks to be replaced either with 2010 model year or newer diesel trucks, or with 2010 or newer alternative fuel vehicles.
Eligible truck owners must meet the following criteria: own a Class 3 to Class 8 diesel truck with a 2006 or older model year engine; provide proof of service to Hunts Point or Port Morris communities for one year; scrap old truck; commit to the program for at least five years; be domiciled or regularly operate in Hunts Point or Port Morris.
The replacement truck must drive 60 percent of total vehicle miles within the New York City areas and visit the Hunts Point or Port Morris area at least twice weekly, or operate 85 percent of total miles in New York counties Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester. Companies using the 85 percent method must also visit the Hunts Point and/or Port Morris areas at least three times each week.
Rebates vary depending on the model year of the truck. For instance, a 2003 model year Class 8 truck is eligible for a $34,000 rebate when it is replaced by a 2010 compliant truck. Class 8 trucks with 2004 through 2006 model years are eligible for $43,000 rebates. Diesel-Electric hybrid and compressed natural gas truck rebates are $48,000. Battery electric truck rebates are set at $70,000.
The program is funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program and is managed by the New York City Department of Transportation. This is the program’s third year.
