On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. joined New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Member Marcos Crespo and Assembly Member Maritza Davila and others to assess the damage from the recent earthquakes and discuss the best ways for New York to assist the island.
The delegation returned to New York on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. During the trip, the group visited a severely damaged power plant in Costa Sur and toured the towns of Guanica and Ponce.
“The situation in Puerto Rico is dire and the people of the island need our help,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. “So many of our brothers and sisters on the island have never fully recovered from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and Governor Andrew Cuomo has been a leading voice in the ongoing relief efforts since then. Elected officials from New York have shown time and time again that we are committed to standing with Puerto Ricans in their time of need, but the federal government must step in to respond to this latest catastrophic event with funding to provide desperately needed aid at a larger scale.”
