The Legal Aid Society and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP filed a lawsuit in New York State Supreme Court today against the City of New York, the New York City Police Department (NYPD), and named and unnamed NYPD officers on behalf of five plaintiffs who were unlawfully arrested and detained on low-level offenses instead of receiving an appearance ticket as prescribed by law during the George Floyd demonstrations last summer. This lawsuit petitions the Court to enjoin the NYPD from continuing to violate the law, award compensatory damages to Plaintiffs, and other relief as the Court deems just and proper.
In January 2020, New York State enacted legislation to eliminate unnecessary arrests, minimize the amount of time that New Yorkers accused of crimes may be detained, and reduce an overcrowded detention system.
Part of the legislation amended New York Criminal Procedure Law to mandate that, for violations, infractions, misdemeanors, and certain class E felonies, police officers issue appearance tickets at the point of a police encounter rather than arrest individuals suspected of committing such offenses.
The NYPD, however, has blatantly disregarded the law by continuing to exercise unfettered discretion to arrest and take into custody individuals alleged to have engaged in low-level offenses, despite the law’s mandate to issue appearance tickets. On Friday, October 19, 2012, at 1313 hours, police responded to a report of an unconscious person found inside of 3544 Broadway, located within the confines of the 30th Precinct in Manhattan.
Upon arrival, responding officers discovered the victim, a 30-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive, with blunt force trauma to the head.
EMS responded to the location and pronounced the male deceased at the scene.

You Should Know that no elected official has publicly criticized and gone against Governor Andrew Cuomo more than I have.
The deaths of more than 13,000 elderly persons in nursing homes in New York State is travesty. The posture, taken by Governor Andrew Cuomo, is an ugly representation of the his leadership, tarnishing his past accomplishments.
My gripes and disagreements with the governor are due to my positions as a Conservative Democrat and Pentecostal minister. My religious conservative beliefs compel me to go against the governors stand on certain issues, that in my purview, are morally wrong and damaging.
I would like to make it clear that my position against Governor Andrew Cuomo have been solely based on my deeply rooted Christian Conservative values. Other than that, if I were a liberal socialist Democrat, I would confidently say that no one has done more to move forward the progressive socialist agenda than Gov. Cuomo. However, I acknowledge, that despite his leftists views, he has done some humanitarian and good will for those in need. For example:
- For Puerto Rico: During the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. The governor went above and beyond the call of duty to help my beautiful island.
- For the gay & lesbian community: Have Gov. Cuomo to thank, when he fought and twisted many arms to ensure that same-sex marriage became legal in New York State. My opposition to gay marriage was the main cause of my contention with the governor.
- For the Bronx County: Governor Cuomo assisted the Bronx when he intervened and allocated monies to The Hunts Point Market, the Bruckner Sheridan Expressway, Orchard Beach, the building of four Metro North Train Stations, (which he jested that he would name one of them Ruben Diaz station), the allocation of much needed funds for Bronx affordable housing, and a piece of land to create The Junior camp for Bronx youths, after the senseless killing of Junior Guzman.
- For union workers: Gov. Cuomo was influential when he got involved in rebuilding and repair of the state’s infrastructure. The construction and repair of new and old bridges, repaving…

Mayor Bill de Blasio today celebrated the appointment of Nina Kubota as President and CEO of the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA). Kubota had previously served as SCA’s Senior Vice President for Capital Plan Development & Implementation, a position she first assumed in January 2020. She has served at SCA in various roles since 1998. Kubota replaces Lorraine Grillo, who left the post earlier this month to become the City’s Senior Advisor for Recovery. Kubota will be the first Japanese American woman to lead the agency.
“The School Construction Authority has done heroic work throughout this pandemic. Their hard work has kept New York City’s children safe and delivered the gold standard of school safety in the United States. Nina Kubota has the experience, vision, and tenacity to build on this mission – and deliver a full school return this fall that keeps every student in our city safe in the classroom,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“I have been fortunate to be part of the incredible team at the SCA and have spent years working hard to meet the Mayor’s goal of creating more than 83,000 new seats to address overcrowding in our schools and modernizing our existing school buildings. Today, FOX Sports announces the donation of $42,000 in new baseball and softball gear and athletic apparel to youth organizations in Los Angeles and New York City in honor of Jackie Robinson Day. Recognized by Major League Baseball (MLB) since 2004, Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, commemorates the day of his MLB debut back in 1947.
The donation – a nod to Jackie’s jersey number 42 – enables kids in his hometown, Los Angeles, and city where he played professionally, New York, to follow in his footsteps by creating access to the sport in which he broke the color line in 1947. The Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills in Los Angeles, Urban Youth Initiative in the Bronx and Central Brooklyn Youth Sports in Brooklyn will use the donated gear to provide baseball and softball programs for the children they serve.
