Remarks as prepared for Chief of Department Terence Monahan:

“Good evening. With me tonight is the Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison, Assistant Chief Larry Nikunen, the Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Bronx, and Deputy Inspector Thomas Alps, Commanding Officer of the 52nd Precinct.

Before I provide a briefing, I want to remind everyone that the information I am about to provide is preliminary and is subject to change as we are only a few hours into the investigation.

Earlier this afternoon in the Bronx, at approximately 03:00 p.m. three officers in uniform, in a marked police vehicle, assigned to the 52 Precinct, observed an SUV occupied by two individuals traveling in the area of Bainbridge Avenue, approaching E. 211 Street with the driver of the vehicle not wearing a seatbelt.

At this time, the officers turned on their police emergency lights and initiated a car stop. After turning right onto E. 211 Street the vehicle stopped for the officers. Two police officers approached the car on the driver’s side and a sergeant approached the vehicle on the passenger side. Using their department smartphones, the officers determined that the driver of the vehicle had 3 open warrants. The officers then directed the man to exit the vehicle so he could be placed under arrest.

As the officers attempted to arrest him outside the vehicle, the man physically resisted…

You should know that thirteen years ago, to be exact, on April 01, 2006, I organized, together with Radio Visión Cristiana Internacional, Radio Cántico Nuevo and the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization, the first massive pro-immigrant march across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City.

In response to a national call-to-action for every major city in the nation to organize and protest the mistreatment of immigrants, and to address the necessity of solving the immigration problem in the nation, we, the Hispanic Ministers and other community groups organized the Great Walk in Solidarity with Immigrants where thousands of people joined us marching across the Brooklyn Bridge to 26 Federal Plaza, where our rally was held.

Referring to our march, Ms. Leslie Casmir, in her article titled “Marching to Stay Here: Thousands Rally vs Immigrant Crackdown” in the New York Daily News on April 02, 2006 wrote the following: “Waving the flags of their homelands, tens of thousands of legal and undocumented immigrants streamed over the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday to protest a proposed crackdown on border crossing. The march was a smaller version of a massive pro-immigrant rally in Los Angeles last month but was still much bigger than anticipated – with word being spread mainly through Spanish churches and media.”

Various major news and media outlets in New York covered the Great Walk in Solidarity with Immigrants, expressing their admiration for the march.

Ms. Lorena Mongelli wrote the following in the New York Post on April 02, 2006: “A roiling sea of immigrants – many of them in the country illegally – and their supporters poured across the Brooklyn Bridge and into Manhattan yesterday to protest what they call “oppressive” reform measures currently under consideration in Congress. Marchers, waving flags from Mexico, Colombia, Honduras and El Salvador, chanted and carried signs recalling America’s roots during the demonstration, organized by state Sen….

BlocPower Community Corporation, a non-profit with a mission to make city buildings greener, healthier, smarter, and more profitable for all, is launching “Green the Bronx,” a campaign to educate multifamily building owners and residents in the Bronx about the benefits of Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps (heat pumps), a clean heating and cooling technology. The campaign will target buildings that still use oil heating systems and educate building owners about the environmental, health, and financial benefits of switching to heat pumps.

BlocPower Community Corporation is managing one of 14 Clean Heating and Cooling Community Campaigns administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) throughout the state and is the only one operating in the Bronx. The campaigns support Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Green New Deal, the most aggressive climate change program in the nation as well as the state’s nation-leading goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent by 2050.

The Bronx is well known for having one of the highest asthma rates in the U.S. due to the pollution and housing conditions. “Green the Bronx” is promulgating heat pumps, which are fuelfree and cause no particulate emissions. This will result in cleaner air in one of the highest asthma rate areas of the country. The systems also provide excellent filters to deliver superior indoor air quality.

“We are thrilled to work with NYSERDA on our shared mission to promote clean heating and cooling while…

Two years ago, the Lady Tigers softball team from the South Bronx and their beloved coach, Chris Astacio, wowed Ellen DeGeneres by sharing their inspiring success story on her daytime talk show.

“It’s really amazing,” DeGeneres marveled when Astacio explained how the team taught the female middle school students, many from disadvantaged, broken homes, to find ambition, confidence and sisterhood. “What you’re doing is so important.”

Now, Astacio and the girls are the subject of a new book, Lady Tigers in the Concrete Jungle: How Softball and Sisterhood Saved Lives in the South Bronx Opens in New Window, by seasoned journalist Dibs Baer.

Seven years after the team was created at the struggling Jordan L. Mott Middle School, the original members are thriving, thanks in no small part to their time with Astacio.

“We have a book written about us, we’ve blown up now!” former teammate Angie Cruz told RаdаrОnlinе.соm. “It’s amazing.”

Creating chaos and failing classes before joining the team, Cruz, now 19, will soon major in psychology in college. She hopes to become a counselor at a struggling high school after graduation.

“I want to help out and be there for others,” she explained. “I want to give back.”

Cruz admitted her “whole life would be different” if…
