The NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) will host the second annual “Bring Your Dad to Afterschool.” The event which will take place in five DYCD funded COMPASS afterschool programs across the city is open to fathers, uncles, grandfathers, male caregivers, mentors, as well as other family and community members.

“The goal of Bring Your Dad to Afterschool is an idea to get father figures more involved within our afterschool and evening programs. Studies have shown that when men and father figures are involved in activities with young people there is an improvement for children behaviorally, educationally, physically and emotional,” said DYCD Commissioner Bill Chong.

This year, the Neuberger Berman Foundation donated Lego Boost Creative Toolboxes for each participating site. The Lego Boost, helps young people learn about loops and variables and improve STEM and creative-problem solving skills to help develop their imagination.

“Neuberger Berman is honored to support DYCD’s Bring Your Dad to Afterschool event and applaud all of the caregivers involved to ensure their children start off the school year on a positive note,“ said Maria Angelov, Neuberger Berman Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility.

“Strong bonds between children and the men in their lives benefit both kids and parents, and time spent together in developmental years is particularly precious,” said Toya Williford, Executive Director of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. “Because of the generous support of Neuberger Berman, our children will have an opportunity to create joyful and lasting memories with their fathers, a formative and vital experience no matter your age.”

DYCD’s Bring Your Dad to Afterschool isan initiative that was inspired by Dads Take Your Child to School Day,a statewide initiative of the NYS Office of Children and Family Services and the NYS Office of Temporary Disability Assistance. Dads Take Your Child To School Dayis celebrated in more than 700 locations across the state and beyond.
