The Verizon Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to the Eagle Academy for Young Men in support of the group’s Digital Literacy Institute.
The Digital Literacy Institute is a training program that provides skills to students to assist their parents with technical knowledge so they will be more comfortable with computers and positioned to play a more active role in their child’s education.
Students teaching parents is a new learning approach that aims to provide parents with basic skills to tackle Internet research, Basic Microsoft Office, social networking and Internet safety. Parents attending the academy will also gain valuable computer skills which can improve their marketability in the work force.
“As New York’s largest provider of telecommunications services, we are strong supporters of technology education at any age,” said April Horton, Verizon director of government and external affairs. “The Eagle Academy’s program helps build a stronger support structure for its students’ education, while giving the parents technology skills that will help them in all aspects of their lives.”
Osei Owusu, principal of Eagle Academy, said: “A young man without a mentor is like an explorer without a map. We must all commit to saving our sons. When we save our sons we save ourselves.”

The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational Web site, Verizon Thinkfinity, here, and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2009, the Verizon Foundation awarded $67.9 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad. It also matched the charitable donations of Verizon employees and retirees, resulting in an additional $26.1 million in combined contributions to nonprofits. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation’s largest employee volunteer programs, Verizon employees and retirees have volunteered more than 5 million hours of community service since 2000.
