The New York City Emergency Management Department partnered with Bronx Community Board 10 to distribute 100 Go Bags to Bronx residents on Thursday. The event was part of the department’s Mobile Office Hours initiative to connect neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs with essential preparedness information and resources. Attendees also received materials to develop an emergency plan, identify hazards, and stay informed about emergencies through Notify NYC, the City’s free communications program.

“Preparedness is a whole community approach, and our Mobile Office Hours initiative enables us to connect with people to begin the conversation about planning for emergencies,” NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell said. “We will continue to work with our local community leaders to equip all New Yorkers with the critical resources to be more prepared and resilient.”

“Although no one knows when disasters will strike, everyone can make preparedness actions a part of their daily routine,” Regional Administrator of FEMA Region II Thomas Von Essen said. “Families should make and practice their plan for disasters and emergencies, including impacts to the places they live, work, attend school, worship, and visit.”

NYC Emergency Management’s Mobile Office Hours connects local neighborhoods with critical resources and information to help them prepare for emergencies. During Thursday’s event, residents received material about preparing for hazards like coastal storms and heat emergencies, and learned about the local Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteer program.

The New York City Emergency Management Department also partnered with FEMA, FDNY, and the American Red Cross in Greater New York. NYC Emergency Management hosts Mobile Office Hours throughout the five boroughs during the coastal storm season.

“FDNY is proud to partner with New York City Emergency Management to provide critical emergency preparedness information to New Yorkers,” Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro said. “Our fire safety educators will be out in the Bronx teaching New Yorkers to keep their families safe from fire, and reminding everyone to have working smoke alarms in their homes.”

“Bronx Community Board #10 is excited to partner with NYC Emergency Management. There is no storm event or local emergency where preparedness does not come in handy,” Bronx Community Board 10 District Manager Matthew Cruz said. “As always, thank you to the women and men of NYC Emergency Management and all of our first responding agencies for their dedication.”

“Now is the time to prepare for a weather-related emergency or for any disaster that could impact our city. The American Red Cross is proud to partner with our NYC partners to help ready our communities,” Regional Chief Executive Officer for the American Red Cross in Greater New York Josh Lockwood said. “Thank you to NYC Emergency Management for bringing us all together.”

Thursday’s Mobile Office Hours was the fourth event since NYC Emergency Management kicked off the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season at Midland Beach in Staten Island on May 31, engaged faith-based organizations and residents at Diversity Plaza in Queens on June 26, 2019 and marked the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season in NYC at the Coney Island Boardwalk on August 01, 2019.
