A new statue of baseball legend Roberto Clemente is watching over Roberto Clemente State Park in Bronx.

The New York Times reports that the statue of the Pittsburgh Pirates slugger is apparently the first statue in New York City honoring a Puerto Rican person.

Clemente was a perennial All-Star who won four National League batting titles and 12 Gold Glove Awards.

He died on December 31, 1972 on a plane that crashed as he was delivering relief supplies to survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua.

The new statue unveiled Thursday shows Clemente doffing his batting helmet as fans cheer for his 3,000^th hit.

Many Puerto Rican New Yorkers feel a special connection to the Puerto Rican-born Clemente even though he played his entire Major League career in Pittsburgh.
