Cardinal Spellman High School senior Amanda Arroyo was recently featured on MSG Varsity’s popular live, call-in show, A Quick: 60, during the weekly Scholastic Spotlight segment.

Arroyo was invited to appear on A Quick: 60 to introduce a video package she wrote for MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s first-of-its-kind initiative dedicated to high school sports and activities. Fellow Cardinal Spellman senior Shelby Boamah edited and produced the package. Viewers can access Arroyo’s appearance, as well as all previous Scholastic Spotlight segments, by logging onto msgvarsity.com or tuning into Cablevision’s iO TV, Channel 614.

“Scholastic Spotlight celebrates students from the tri-state area by having them in the studio to showcase their skills,” explained host Mike Quick, a veteran sportscaster who now hosts his own show on MSG Varsity. "It's the first step to fulfilling a dream for these students and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Students appearing on Scholastic Spotlight often plan to pursue careers in media as newscasters, producers or sportscasters. Through MSG Varsity’s partnership with tri-state high schools, they are given a hands-on opportunity to train using video equipment provided by MSG Varsity and are encouraged to capture activities at their schools. Ultimately, the students are empowered to edit and produce their own segments.

“MSG Varsity works with the educational curriculum in each high school to teach students and faculty about television production and media,” explained Maura Fox, Vice President of School Outreach for MSG Varsity. “We provide funding and resources, including scholarships, but just as important we supply television and digital outlets where their work can be shared with their community. Maybe the best part is the satisfaction of knowing that MSG Varsity is helping to promote pride in oneself and in one’s school. The whole experience is tremendously rewarding.”

MSG Varsity includes a multi-platform suite of services, made up of a 24/7 television network that airs on Cablevision’s iO TV service, channel 14; a comprehensive online destination, msgvaristy.com; and a groundbreaking interactive service, channel 614 — all spotlighting extracurricular activities and events at local high schools.
