Milton Tabachnick died peacefully at his home in Madison on Sunday, April 27, 2014, after a brief illness. He was 91.

Milton was born in the Bronx, New York City on June 25, 1922, the second of the three sons of Harry and Sara Tabachnick. Milton had a quick wit combined with a sweet nature. This won him many friends wherever he went. Milton attended City College of New York before joining his older brother, Joe, in Berkeley, Calif. He worked at the Kaiser Shipyards until he was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He served on Saipan and was honorably discharged in 1946. Milton then attended the University of California-Berkeley, earning Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry. After graduation, Milton was at Duke University, then New York University, until he was appointed to a professorship in biochemistry at New York Medical College. When he retired in 1994, Milt was Dean of the Graduate School at the New York Medical College. Milton carried out groundbreaking research on the thyroid and the thyroid hormone, thyroxine. His work made a vital contribution to our understanding of this important organ. He was also repeatedly voted the funniest professor by the student of New York Medical College.

In 1952, Milton married Elizabeth Swirnofsky. Their union lasted until her death in 2005. Milton and Elizabeth were active supporters if the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Bronx Zoo. Milton moved to Capitol Lakes Retirement Center in Madison after Elizabeth’s death. His kindness and sense of humor made him immensely popular there. In 2011, he left Capitol Lakes to live with his niece, Elena.

He is survived by his younger brother, Bob; sister-in-law, Jeanne and sister-in-law, Brunhild; and many loving nieces and nephews.

It was Milton’s wishes that no funeral services be held.
