Rent-A-Center (NASDAQ:RCII), the nation’s leading rent-to-own company, helped strengthen the sense of community for families residing in the Edenwald Housing Complex. Area Rent-A-Center representatives delivered and assembled more than $12,000 in electronics and furniture for the new Edenwald Beacon Community Center as part of the company’s Random Acts of Caring program.

The families joined community leaders, including New York City Councilman Larry B. Seabrook and officials from the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, which operates the new center, at an unveiling ceremony.

Rent-A-Center was alerted to the needs of the Edenwald Housing Complex by longtime community champion Seabrook.

Edenwald Beacon Community Center serves more than 4,000 low-income residents of the Edenwald Public Housing Complex, the largest housing development in the Bronx. The new center is an initiative of the office of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development to provide enhanced youth services in city housing facilities.

Rent-A-Center’s donation to Edenwald Beacon included 13 personal computers, high-definition televisions, video-game systems, an air conditioner, furniture sets and entertainment centers to help make the community center an enjoyable, educational and comfortable place for residents.

“First and foremost, I want to thank the representatives from Rent-A-Center for their valuable contribution to the Edenwald Beacon Community Center Program. During the past eight years I have taken every opportunity possible to improve the quality of life in the Edenwald community and the new electronics and furniture will help the community greatly. I agree with President Obama, that a strong nation is made up of strong families and parents and grandparents deserve an opportunity to make a better future for themselves and their children. That is why over the past eight years, I have delivered into District 12 over $50 Million Dollars in capital projects and services for working families, children and senior citizens,” concluded Councilman Seabrook.

“The Edenwald Beacon Community Center Program of the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center is very appreciative of Councilman Seabrook’s advocacy on our behalf and to Rent-A-Center for this extremely kind donation of furniture and electronics,” said Ivan Croft, Director of Mosholu Montefiore Community Center.

“This generous gift will allow us to continue providing a safe place for the community to attend and will greatly benefit both the youth and community residents of the Edenwald Houses by adding both recreational and learning tools for all to enjoy,” said Don Bluestone, M.S.W., executive director, Mosholu Montefiore Community Center.

“Rent-A-Center’s community outreach philosophy and its business model share a common thread, both strive to make the lives of everyday Americans more manageable,” said Xavier Dominicis, vice president, public affairs, Rent-A-Center.

In New York, Rent-A-Center operates 178 stores including nine in the Bronx. The company also operates a national product service center in Liverpool, where a team of specially trained technicians services merchandise on rent.
