In January 2012, Picture The Homeless issued a report, “Banking on Vacancy: Homelessness and Real Estate Speculation” documenting the outstanding amount of underutilized housing stock that is available in just a third of New York City.

The survey proves that there are enough vacant properties in just 20 community districts, a third of the city, to potentially house 199,981 people essentially clearing out the shelter system.

Join the town hall meeting on May 23, 2012 at CUNY on the Concourse, as we present the findings from our vacant building count, and engage neighborhood residents in a visioning process to find out what YOU want to see in your community. Housing, playgrounds, gardens, more small business development, parking? All that empty space can solve a whole lot of problems, and we want to get neighborhood residents involved in fighting to transform these properties.
