Bronx Senator Ruben Diaz is sponsoring a bill that would mandate parents take state certified classes or else their child won’t move on to the 7th grade.

Diaz’s bill, which has one co-sponsor indicted Senator John Sampson of Brooklyn, calls on the State Education Department to come up with a dozen classes focused on what children are learning in school and the struggles they go through away from home.

Parents would then be obligated to attend at least four classes before the student completes 6th grade.

If the parents do not show the student would be held back.

“By teaching parents how to deal with these problems they will be able and prepared to talk with their children and deal with problems.” Diaz said Friday.

Diaz’s bill goes the extra mile to protect parents who have a hectic work schedule.

The Bronx Senator has provision that would mandate businesses give a paid day off to parents so they can make the classes.

“This is not for bad parents, to the contrary this is for good parents.” Diaz said.

A spokesman for the State Education Department emailed CBS6 Friday saying “It’s not our practice to comment on proposed legislation. I can say, though, that the department complies with all statutory mandates.”
