A 36-year-old man who lost his firefighter brother on 9/11 was struck by a vehicle and killed as he tried to cross the Bruckner Expressway in Bronx early Wednesday, police and a witness said.

Paul Lynch appeared to have gotten onto the highway through a hole in the fence at the edge of the Bruckner’s service road. He was hit in the right lane of the eastbound Bruckner near White Plains Road. about 5:30 a.m. and was found unconscious with severe body trauma, police said. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he died.

The vehicle that hit Lynch, a 1998 gray Toyota Camry, was traveling eastbound as Lynch tried to cross from south to north, police said. The car remained at the scene and no criminality is suspected.

The driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition with shoulder and neck pain, police said.

A witness who saw the accident from the service road of the expressway said the man appeared to be preoccupied when he was smacked by the vehicle.

According to a witness, it looked like he was trying to make a phone call.
