Grace Valdes, a 19-year old Washington Heights resident, is tired of the people loitering, damaging machines and offering swipes at the A subway station on Ft. Washington Avenue and West 181st Street.

Ms. Valdes started a petition last month and now presented New York City Councilmember Robert Jackson with the signatures of more than 1,200 community residents who share her opinion that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) must restore the station agent that was removed in summer 2010.

The petition says that since the station agent was eliminated numerous complaints have been received about safety for riders, damaged Metro Card machines and overall maintenance. The 181st Street and Ft. Washington Avenue A subway station is heavily used, especially during rush hours, and its physical appearance has deteriorated to the point of embarrassment to the community and city as a whole. The station is unsafe for school children and damaged turnstiles have frustrated riders who have no one to turn to.

Ms. Valdes’ goal is 5,000 signatures and local businesses and residents have posted her petition in storefront windows and building lobby’s to support her quest. Please contact Martin Collins at 212-928-1322 to speak with Councilmember Jackson and Ms. Valdes.
