Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz (Brooklyn), will hold a press conference to unveil his legislation (A.9761), which would ban the advertisement of alcoholic beverages during sporting events, during daytime and certain evening hours.

Under this legislation commercials that advertise alcohol would be limited to sporting events broadcasted after ten o’clock p.m.

The Super Bowl, one of the biggest sports events of the year with an average of 100 million people watching, is known for its beer, hard liquor, and other alcoholic beverage commercials. Studies have proven that televised advertisements affect the decisions that youth make about using alcohol. Currently there are 2.5 million people who are affected by addictions in New York State. It is important to work to prevent these addictions from affecting our youth as well. “We have so many problems in our society with underage drinking; we don’t need this kind of advertising. This industry is targeting a vulnerable population. Prohibiting these advertisements will prevent our youth from associating alcoholic beverages with their hobbies and interests,” stated Ortiz.

Ortiz will hold a press conference on Friday, Februart 5, 210 at 12:00 pm in her district office at 404 55th Street, Brooklyn, New York 11220
