The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) today launched its annual “Take Care NY” public health outreach campaign focused on prevention and early detection of some of the most pervasive forms of illness and chronic disease affecting New Yorkers.

Throughout the month of October, Jacobi Medical Center, North Central Bronx Hospital,  Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center and other HHC community health centers in the borough will host screening and educational events targeting diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, HIV, cancer and more. They will also provide flu vaccinations, nutrition counseling, smoking cessation information, mammograms and other services available at little or no cost.

With the start of flu season, HHC hospitals will focus on making the influenza vaccine available to all. This year’s vaccine also protects against H1N1, the flu virus that caused so much concern last year.

“Our mission with October’s Take Care NY campaign is to help save as many lives as we can,” said HHC President Alan D. Aviles. “Unfortunately, too many people do not take the time to get screened or vaccinated. When identified in the early stages, life-threatening and chronic diseases are more readily treated and managed.

Public hospitals are committed to disease prevention and community education and sponsor a number of aggressive outreach efforts throughout the year to make the public aware of free or low cost screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopies, immunizations and affordable preventive health care and treatment.

The health screenings and other HHC services are available all year-round to New Yorkers regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. Individuals without health insurance will get help at Take Care NY events to apply for any health insurance plan they may qualify for or learn how to access affordable healthcare services at HHC hospitals and clinics through HHC Options, a program where fees are based on family size and income.

New Yorkers can dial 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/hhc for a complete list of Take Care NY screening events at their nearest Bronx public hospital.
