Proposal would help New Yorkers make healthier choices while raising nearly $1 billion in much needed revenue

The Alliance for a Healthier New York issued the following statement in response to news that the soda tax, a proposal that dozens of studies have shown would help prevent obesity while also raising nearly $1 billion in desperately needed revenue, is part of the governor’s new plan to help close New York’s $9.2 billion deficit:

“We are glad to see that the soda tax is gaining serious momentum,” said Eric Koch, spokesman for The Alliance for a Healthier New York. “Despite the untold millions the soda lobby has poured into muddying the debate, countless studies show that the soda tax is an extremely effective way to fight obesity and help people live healthier lives. With New York facing an enormous budget deficit, the soda tax is also a way to help New York’s fiscal and physical health at the same time.”
