Ms. Wheelchair New York 2017 visited Project DreamAIR Saturday, teaching its members to overcome hardships and embrace challenge.
Daniyah Manderson, a grade school teacher, spoke to the young women about how to face bullying, deal with school, peers and other adversities they may face in their lives.
Manderson says she is using her accomplishments to empower young women.
Ms. Wheelchair NY 2017 Dayniah Manderson was crowned on September 24, 2016. The crowning took place at the Albany Marriott on Wolf Rd in Albany, NY. During her year-long reign, she will travel the state promoting the Ms. Wheelchair New York and Ms. Wheelchair America programs as well as her platform. She will represent New York in the Ms. Wheelchair America 2018 competition to be held in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Dayniah Manderson is from Bronx. She is an 8th Grade English Teacher at Mott Hall Community School she also full-fills other roles at the school as Department Chair, Grade Level Chair, Curriculum Advisor and Testing Coordinator. She has a bachelors degree in Secondary English Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. She also has started her own production company called Covert Movements Productions.
Congratulations also to First Runner-Up, Ketrina Hazell and Second runner-up Valerie Joseph. Ms. Wheelchair New York organization emphasizes one’s advocacy and public speaking skills, as well as personal perception and projection. The Ms. Wheelchair New York Pageant is open to all women who use a wheelchair on a daily basis, are permanent residents of New York and who are 21 and over. The Ms. Wheelchair New York program is a sisterhood of dynamic women who are dedicated to promoting disability awareness, education, and empowerment. The person selected to hold the title serves as a spokesperson whose responsibility it is to speak to the general public and the disability community about her life as a person with a disability, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and a platform issue of her choosing. Ms. Wheelchair NY competes nationally with other state titleholders in the annual Ms. Wheelchair America Program.

As a high-impact program, Project DreamAIR strives to increase college matriculation for students from the Bronx by recruiting members in the 7th grade. We hope to increase academic performance by educating our members on wellness and mindfulness practices, and introducing members to business principles.
To reach these ambitious students, Project DreamAIR could not exist without the support of its partner colleges and universities and local community affiliations.
Thanks to the collaboration of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, we have partnered with the Owen Dolen Recreation Center in Bronx. Our members complete workshops twice a month on Saturdays. Additionally, all members must complete a community service project on the third Saturday of every month.
