Anthony Lewis, 46, of Bronx, NY, Margaret Jones, 39, of Springfield, MA, and Michael Bell of MA, were arrested by Fairfield police following an attempt to cash a forged check on October 24, 2013.
According to the police report, Lewis entered the Fairfield County Bank on Tunxis Hill Road and attempted to cash a check written out to him and signed by him. When the bank refused to cash the check, Lewis exited and got into a Blue Cadillac driven by Jones and occupied by Bell.
The manager of the bank reported the incident to police. An off duty officer working a road job saw a vehicle matching the description and gave the plate number to dispatch. Another officer then spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Black Rock Turnpike and Candlewood Road.
When interviewed on scene by police, the trio’s stories did not match. The manager of the bank then identified Lewis as the man in the bank.
The owner of the check used was found to be a Fairfield resident. When the customer was contacted by the bank, it was discovered that she was already on her way to the bank after being contacted by the Trumbull branch for the same thing happening there.
Not long after, it was also determined that a check under the residents name was also used and cashed at a Bridgeport branch. Fairfield police are investigating the Trumbull and Bridgeport incidents.
Lewis was charged with sixth-degree larceny, second-degree forgery and criminal attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny. He was held on $20,000 bond.
Jones and Bell were each charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and held on $2,500 bond. All three are due in court November 6, 2013.
