The BDC is very proud to announce that 12 Bronx Junior Photo League (BJPL) students received recognition from the regional 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, receiving over 60 awards for their work.

The nine Gold Key Winners will be featured in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards: New York City Regional Exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from March 22 through Monday, May 27, 2019.

Congratulations to BJPL students:

Angie Avendaño, Fanny Aucacama, Donezsah (Zarah) Browne, Anastasia Cardona, Bianca Colon, Darolin Cruz, Fanta Diop, Alberto Garcia, Brian Hernandez-Armenta, Tianna Maldonado, Yessica Morocho, and Chloe Rodriguez.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. They received nearly 13,000 submissions this year from teens across New York City and nearly 340,000 works were submitted to the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards throughout the country.

The work of the 9 students that received Gold Keys, Fanta Diop, Angie Avendaño, Anastasia Cardona, Chloe Rodriguez, Yessica Morocho, Brian Hernandez-Armenta, Alberto Garcia, Tianna Maldonado, and Darolin Cruz, will advance on to be judged nationally by an impressive panel of creative–industry experts to receive National Medals, and will have their work exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning March 22.

All Gold and Silver Key award recipients will receive their keys at a ceremony at the New School on March 24th.

About

The Bronx Junior Photo League (BJPL) is the Bronx Documentary Center free after-school photography and journalism program serving middle through high school students. The program teaches Bronx youth to use documentary practices to explore their communities, families, environments, and much more. The program focuses on social justice issues in the South Bronx, one of America’s poorest and most underserved communities. The curriculum gives students an immersive experience in the technical aspects of photography and photo editing as well as programs promoting critical thinking skills, visual and news literacy, and writing practice.
