Large-scale mural addresses stigma attached to people with mental health issues using bright and beckoning colors and a positive message.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the 4,000 plus square feet mural “I Like You The Way You Are – Mental Health Has Many Faces” by International painter and muralist Tova Snyder will take place on Tuesday, July 25, at 5:30 p.m. The mural occupies the top parts of the 14 consecutive walls of the Theatre Arts Production School (TAPCO) at 2225 Webster Avenue in Bronx, just south of Fordham Road. Painted in the bright colors of the rainbow spectrum, the mural sends out a positive message of inclusion, acceptance and diversity, and is visible from afar.

The artwork was painted in the studio on “parachute cloth”, and then installed onto the building, using a method pioneered by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. As part of the NYC MAP program, the artwork’s concept was developed during workshops held by Tova Snyder with mental health consumers from VIP Community Services. The project management is by New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and it is funded by the Fund For Public Health in New York.
