Renovations Coming To Bronx Veterans Memorial

The Van Nest  Memorial honors those in the community who fought in WWI, WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam war.

Resident Bernadette Ferrara says that for years the memorial has been overlooked and that it is the only one in the Bronx without a flagpole.

The memorial site is expected to be getting all new benches, shrubbery and an American flagpole.

Ferrera says with the help of Councilman Ritchie Torres, funding was secured for the new pole, and the city’s Parks Department allocated $400,000 in funding for the historic area.

The area will also be handicap-accessible and the fence will be lowered so community members can better see the memorial.

Construction is expected to be finished by next spring.
