The Jets have officially signed former LSU assistant, Thomas McGaughey as their new special teams coordinator. The team signed him on National Signing Day.

The decision came when the Jets’ former ST coordinator, Ben Kotwica left the team to join Jay Gruden’s staff in Washington as their special teams coordinator.

There were reports that the Jets asked their former longtime STC who is now does Jets postgame radio on SNY, Mike Westoff to come out of retirement to rejoin the Jets.

“I’m done.” Westhoff said. “The way the league is set up as far as special teams, it just does not interest me anymore. It also doesn’t sound like there isn’t going to be a lot for special teams coaches in the future.”

Thomas McGaughey is pretty familiar with the NFL. He was a safety who entered as an un-drafted free agent in 1996. He participated in the Cincinnati Bengals’ training camp and made it on the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad. During his coaching days in the NFL, McGaughey was the Kansas City Chiefs’ assistant special teams coach in 2002, Denver assistant coach in 2006 and assistant for the Giants from 2007 to 2010. When he was with the Giants in 07, the team won SuperBowl XLII against the New England Patriots.

At LSU where he was the assistant ST coach, he helped lead the Tigers to a BCS championship game in 2011 and LSU was ranked top 10 nationally for net punting.
