A New York City gun-and-drug dealer has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for selling assault rifles, other guns and heroin.

Jose Alvarez was sentenced Wednesday in Manhattan. The 36-year-old pleaded guilty last month to gun and drug sale charges.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office says Alvarez sold more than 70 grams of heroin and 25 loaded guns to undercover officers. Prosecutors say the sales happened in Manhattan, Bronx and suburban Yonkers over an 18-month span.

Prosecutors say Alvarez’s wares included three assault rifles.

Defense lawyer Patrick Jerome Brackley notes that Alvarez could have faced life in prison if convicted. He says Alvarez is married and has children.
