Join us for the final performance of the BxMA Co-Lab commission of Alice Farley Dance Theater, titled “Conversations with Monsters.”
The Bronx Museum of the Arts’ Co-Lab residency of the Alice Farley Dance Theater is coming to a close with this final performance of “Conversations with Monsters,” Experiments in Puppetry, Mask and Dance, with a talk by choreographer/designer Alice Farley. For this commission, Alice Farley continues 40 years of work exploring the geometrics of the human body, the magnification of human proportion, and the language of movement and shape.
Collaborators and performers include:
- Mark Mindek – historical dance, comedia, and jazz
- Susana Botero – contemporary and latin
- Baldapo – ballet, modern dance, and fine arts painting/design
- Isryel Jules (a.k.a. Tales from “It’s Showtime”) – street dance
- Lily G. Cummings and Hilde Wohler – stilt dancers

About Alice Farley Dance Theater
Award winning choreographer Alice Farley’s unique works combine magic and circus with puppetry, elaborate surreal visuals, and dance. She designs sculptural costumes and kinetic puppets to choreograph imaginary worlds for both black box theaters and site-specific environmental landscapes. Farley has produced dance/theater for performances in the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and Asia, in such venues as the Public Theater in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize winning composer Henry Threadgill (part of the Henson Festival), the Whitney Museum, Madison Square Park, Philadelphia Fine Arts, Singapore Arts, New Music America Festival with composer Peter Garland, Aruba International Dance Festival, Toronto Harbourfront Festival, Quebec Festival d’Ete, Andy Warhol Museum Opening, and Cleveland Science Center, to name a few. She has assisted in designing concepts and illusions for Cirque du Soleil.
The artist is the founder and president of Looking Glass Productions, created in 1993, and artistic director of Alice Farley Dance Theater, headquartered in New York City. Her work has been recognized with six choreographic fellowships from the NEA, a New York City “Bessie” Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement, grants from NYFA, DCA, the Cary Trust, Meet the Composer, the Jim Henson Foundation, and others for her innovative dance/theater productions. She was selected by Creative Time and architect Cesar Pelli to create a site specific production for the grand opening of the Winter Garden Atrium at the New York Financial Center. BxMA Co-Lab is a dance-led commission program involving experimental ensembles, collectives, and choreographers whose practices are firmly grounded in socio-political issues, and have interdisciplinary collaboration as a core and integrated part of their work. The goal of Co-Lab is to provide financial and institutional support to artists whose work challenge boundaries, takes risks and that work outside of the status quo.
